Since his appointment as Artistic Director of the Manitoba Theatre Centre in 1989, Steven has received credit for enhancing the company's artistry, and for developing a new base of audience members and donors.
Born in Montreal and trained at McGill University, Bishop's University, and the National Theatre School of Canada, Steven has directed many productions for MTC, including the Canadian premiere of Steve Martin’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile, the world premiere of Mark Stein’s Mating Dance of the Werewolf and its American premiere at the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, California.
Steven also conceived and directed The History of Manitoba from the Beginning of Time to the Present in 45 Minutes, an award-winning play that tours Manitoba high schools. Additional credits include Tropical Madness at the Shaw Festival and Associate Director for Romeo and Juliet at the Stratford Festival. In June of 2007 Steven received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Winnipeg. In 2012 Steven was appointed to the Order of Canada for his contributions to Canadian theatre.
Steven is married to actress Terri Cherniack. They have lived in Winnipeg with their two children since 1987.
