General Audition Information

MTC holds two types of auditions: general and play-specific.

We hold general auditions once a year, usually in the spring (anywhere from April to early July), and those are for any Equity or non-Equity in the Winnipeg area who would like to audition for us, especially if they haven't auditioned for us before. An actor sends us a photo and resume when requesting a general audition and MTC keeps the information on file and notify that person when we have the date confirmed. One monologue of no more than 3 minutes is required for the audition.

With play-specific auditions, MTC and individual directors invite actors to audition in Winnipeg. They may also audition elsewhere in the country, such as the co-producing theatre's city, or Toronto, or the city of the director's origin. This applies for dramas and musicals alike. Local auditions are not always possible for several reasons: sometimes the director already has people in mind and doesn't audition at all; sometimes they do invited auditions in specific cities; sometimes they just aren't able to get to Winnipeg; sometimes they've been here recently and know the local acting community. We try to balance the needs of the community with the needs of the individual director and, of course, the show.

We also collect resumes from actors interested in specific productions and forward those resumes to the appropriate director on the actor's behalf. When our season is announced, usually in March, we recommend actors have a look at the plays and see where their interest lies and which roles are most appropriate to them. Then they let us know what they are interested in and we file resumes to send to the respective directors. This is also the best route for non-Winnipeg actors who hope to be seen in other cities. It helps to have the information soon after the season is announced, so we have the actors on file in case the production's auditions take place before the general auditions are scheduled. We can keep the resumes on file for the general auditions when that date is confirmed.
